Wildflower Season at Camas Meadows
The appearance of Glacier Lily's mark the end of winter and the beginning of spring at Camas. However, the balsam arrowleaf marks the beginning of wildflower season. Everything is breaking bud and blooming right now at Camas. The weather forecast is clear, sunny as far as the eye can so there will be more flowers blooming soon. My prediction is that peak wildflower display will be from mid-May to mid-June.
The Sandhill Cranes returned to the meadow quite soon after snowmelt. The elk took a little bit longer waiting for the greenup on the meadow. This year the herd is at 25 animals. So the effort of the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife to eliminate the Camas herd is having some effect, but it looks like a few cow elk have managed to survive last falls cow season. Hopefully, one of these days the Department will recognize the value of wildlife to Washington state and use those hunting license funds that hunters pay to increase wildlife populations rather than reducing them!
The aspen have just broken bud and soon the rustle of leaves will once again be heard on the meadow. Spring is a special time at Camas Meadows.
We have plenty of openings including Memorial Day weekend. So come to Camas Meadows and enjoy the wildflowers and blue skies of eastern Washington. The most special time at Camas Meadows is May and early June.
