Waiting for the Snow.....

Waiting for the Snow......

The first snowfall at Camas has come as early as October 1st and as late as December 28th.  Most years the snow starts just after Thanksgiving and continues until early March.

The maximum snow depth is almost always in late January.  After that the snowfalls and melts from the warm daytime temperatures come into balance until the nights finally get above freezing.  Once nigh time temperatures start staying above 32 degrees in early March the melt starts in earnest.  Usually, by the first of April we are totally snow free.

We are on the cold side of winter.  This week temperatures have been up to 30 degrees plus in the brilliant sunshine, but the crystal clear nights have been hovering down around five degrees.  So the flannel and down comforters are on the beds and the wood is stocked around the chalet.  The wood stove keeps the cabin comfy warm allowing quick trips outside to experience the nip in the air.

December is also the season for Christmas.  We went up Tuesday hunting for the perfect Christmas tree.  I do like to spot my tree early in the season so that by December I can just cut the tree and head home rather than spend time searching for the perfect wild tree.  Only natural Christmas trees for Camas!

This is the tree decorated for the Christmas season.  The spiral staircase got its share of greenery for the season.

The elk do not mind the colder weather.  On Tuesday night they strolled right in front in the evening dusk.  With the colder temperatures the next weather system will bring snow and I am sure at that point the elk will head to their wintering grounds down by the Columbia River.  They will return to Camas Meadows on April 15th of 2014.

We are open for the second Christmas tree lighting on December 13th and 14th weekend.  We are open during the week from the December 9th through the 20th.   At this point, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and  Boxing Day are still open.  Then booked through New Years.

January is the start of x-country skiing season.  We have openings.  President's Day week in February is already booked.

Winter at Camas Meadows is a special time of year.
